A Final Letter to My Father

Yemeni mp

Ahmed Saif Hashed

In this war, every faction condemns the violations of its adversaries but refuses to acknowledge the atrocities they inflict upon our people everywhere. Each party wields its authority in the regions it controls to intimidate and subjugate those who dare to criticize their horrors—many of which have become too numerous to count.

Despotism, tyranny, brutality, plunder, and corruption persist unabated, fueled by a cycle of justifications. Each faction rationalizes its own atrocities by highlighting the barbarity of its opponents. This complicity lays bare the stark reality of our situation.

Today, dear father, we find ourselves in the aftermath of a sordid war that has stripped our people of their unity, sovereignty, and much of their future. Local factions have wreaked havoc and corruption upon our land, amassing wealth while our homeland remains desolate and fragmented. The parties involved have shamelessly shed blood and devalued human life.

The citizens, dear father, bear the burden. Hearts are choked with despair as suffering accumulates. We march steadily toward hunger, famine, and death. There is no protector for our people, nor anyone to halt this enduring pain that has persisted for far too long.

They thrive on our blood and hunger, intensifying their violations of our humanity. They invade what little remains of our breath, all while claiming to negotiate on our behalf. How brazen they are, and how deeply they have sunk into brutality.

It is no longer possible to deceive ourselves. They have conspired to tear apart our people, feeding a monstrous tide of hatred capable of igniting the earth and sky. The result has been a devastating fragmentation of our beloved Yemen, spreading fires, hunger, oppression, and servitude among our people—an affliction that needs no further elaboration.
